"Cold Water" - Terlingua Creek meanders through this area, as well as several other large seasonal creeks. This area is West of Hwy 118 South and encompasses several thousand acres. Agua Fria starts about 40 miles South of Alpine and goes for miles. It is not all barren — you will find evidence of once large forests, with many areas showing large remains of petrified wood. There is considerable amount of bentonite deposits, which in some cases is mined for cat litter and drilling mud and is also used to seal dirt tanks. Minerals are owned almost 80% in this area by the State of Texas. Tarus Mesa, also in Agua Fria, was the area used to train some of the first astronauts for the moon landing as the surface was said to be much like what the moon's surface was supposed to be. It is not unusual to find fossils & arrowheads all over this area. This area, as well as the entire South Brewster County, is rich in history and artifacts.
